The Impact of the War in Ukraine on the Indian Economy.

How the Russia-Ukraine Conflict Rippled Through India’s Economy

Cash Crunch and Market Hesitancy

The military conflict between Russia and Ukraine has worsened an ongoing liquidity squeeze across the Indian economy. Still reeling from pandemic-era financial strains, everyday consumers are holding back on spending due to limited access to liquid cash. Simultaneously, major corporations remain reluctant to inject fresh capital into the market, wary of diminished returns during volatile times.

Soaring Food and Energy Import Bills

Escalating import expenses for both crude oil and essential cooking oils have placed a heavy strain on the national exchequer. Household budgets have taken the hardest hit:

  • Essential Groceries: Sunflower oil—a staple in traditional Indian cooking—saw steep price spikes due to severe supply disruptions from Ukraine, a major cultivator.
  • Freight & Logistics: Surging fuel prices directly inflated transportation charges, raising the cost of everyday groceries and perishable food items across the country.

Heavy Fossil Fuel Reliance and EV Pricing Gaps

Surging crude prices hit Indian consumers particularly hard due to decades of policy focus on fossil fuels over renewable energy transitions. While tax incentives exist for electric vehicles (EVs), their steep entry prices—often exceeding ₹10 lakh—remain far out of reach for a population where a large segment earns roughly ₹10,000 a month. This stark pricing gap forces buyers toward conventional, fuel-inefficient vehicles, deepening the nation’s reliance on imported oil.

Rising Interest Rates and Budgetary Misalignment

Rather than cushioning the public, financial institutions have raised loan interest rates to safeguard themselves against broader economic instability, effectively passing the financial burden onto struggling consumers. This trend unfolds alongside a national budget heavily oriented toward long-term infrastructure and urban planning projects, offering limited direct economic relief to vulnerable populations still recovering from recent crises.
