Skyroot Makes History: India’s First Private Rocket, Vikram-1, Delivers Payloads and Postcards to Orbit.

Mission Aagaman: India’s First Private Orbital Rocket Poised for July 18 Liftoff

A Historic First for Indian Aerospace India is on the verge of a major milestone as the country’s first privately developed orbital rocket prepares to launch from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota. Built by the aerospace startup Skyroot, the rocket is named Vikram-1 in honor of Dr. Vikram Sarabhai, the pioneering father of India’s space program. This upcoming liftoff marks the very first time an orbital-class vehicle, designed and manufactured entirely by a private entity, will take flight from Indian soil.

Engineering and Payload Capabilities Aptly named “Mission Aagaman” (meaning arrival), the flight officially signals the entry of India’s private sector into the competitive global space market. Vikram-1 is a multi-stage orbital vehicle featuring a lightweight, all-carbon-composite structure. It is powered by proprietary, in-house propulsion systems—combining high-thrust solid-fuel boosters with cutting-edge 3D-printed engines. The vehicle is specifically engineered to transport small satellites weighing up to 350 kg directly into Low Earth Orbit (LEO).

The Goal of the Test Flight At its core, this maiden flight is a critical proving ground. Skyroot Aerospace aims to evaluate how its homegrown technology performs under extreme, real-world flight conditions. The vital telemetry and in-flight data gathered during Mission Aagaman will empower the company to refine its designs, improve future iterations, and build a reliable launch service.
